The East Kimberley region of Western Australia is the only known location in the world where unique Zebra Rock can be found. Dating back 600 million years to the Pre Cambrian period, this fine-grained siliceous argillite is thought to have formed under calm or deep water, resulting in rhythmic patterns of red bands or spots contrasting against a lighter background. The coloration is due to the presence of iron oxide within the sediment.
